Iyengar Yoga is named after B.K.S. Iyengar, who made the teachings of yoga accessible to all through his innovations in sequencing, pose modifications, use of props, and pioneering methods of yoga therapy. He was named by Time Magazine as one of the world’s 100 most influential people. At the time of his death in 2014 he was widely acknowledged as the world's foremost yoga teacher.

What makes Iyengar Yoga different?

Iyengar Yoga is a highly transformative method of yoga based on the principle of meditation in action. Keen attention to the details of action and movement, sequence, and timing are some of the qualities that distinguish Iyengar Yoga from other forms of yoga or physical exercise. As the body is gradually trained to become stronger and more agile through the practice of yoga asanas (poses), the mind itself becomes more alert, focused, and reflective. The practice creates feelings of steadiness, lightness, total absorption in the moment.

Iyengar Yoga has deep roots in ancient yoga philosophy, particularly the Yoga Sutras of Patañjali which outline an 8-fold path to spiritual fulfillment. Yoga asanas (poses) are the most accessible entry point for the modern day practitioner, and are therefore the most widely taught, but the other limbs of yoga are also taught and their importance is never de-emphasized. Iyengar Yoga classes incorporate the larger messages of yoga philosophy into the teaching. Students are encouraged to penetrate through the various layers of body, mind, breath, senses, and awareness to experience self-knowledge.

Iyengar Yoga is differentiated from other methods by a world-wide, standardized system of instruction. Certified Iyengar Yoga Teachers (CIYTs) undergo rigorous training and evaluation to earn their certifications. By law, only CIYTs are permitted to describe their method of instruction as "Iyengar Yoga.” Look for the Certification Mark which ensures that any teacher claiming to teach “Iyengar Yoga” has earned the right, and responsibility, to use that designation.
